Background
ÕýÆ·À¶µ¼º½ University demolished the former Memorial Arena in 2012 and was leasing ice time at the Halifax Forum for intramural, club and varsity ice sport use.
A comprehensive physical plan for the department of Athletics and Recreation was completed folllowing the momentum of the new Fitness Centre, Dalplex Fieldhouse Floor Renewal, and Sexton Campus Recreation renovations. The Plan identifies an arena facility (now conceived as the Oulton-Stanish Centre) as the highest priority physical requirement for the department of Athletics and Recreation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Oulton‑Stanish Centre?
The Oulton‑Stanish Centre is a two‑level, multi‑use facility featuring an NHL‑sized ice surface that supports both ice and non‑ice activities.
- Level 1 includes the main entrance and lobby, NHL‑sized ice surface, locker rooms, offices, and storage for the men’s and women’s varsity hockey teams, six additional locker rooms, and washroom facilities.
- Level 2 features food services, a warm lobby overlooking the ice, an event room with views of the ice surface, access to 936 seats, storage, washrooms, and the ÕýÆ·À¶µ¼º½ Physiotherapy Clinic.
- The building is equipped with audiovisual technology to support live streaming of games and events.
Why was it built?
ÕýÆ·À¶µ¼º½ University had been without an on‑campus rink since 2012, when Memorial Arena was demolished due to health and safety concerns.
Since that time:
- Varsity, club, and intramural teams were required to travel off campus to the Halifax Forum.
- Community activities such as public skating and Dal Tiger hockey camps were no longer able to operate on campus.
The Oulton‑Stanish Centre restores an on‑campus ice facility and:
- Enhances recreation programming and participation.
- Reduces travel time, improving safety and convenience for students.
- Strengthens student experience and campus culture.
- Supports ÕýÆ·À¶µ¼º½â€™s broader health and wellness hub.
- Nearly triples the size of the ÕýÆ·À¶µ¼º½ Physiotherapy Clinic (from 975 sq. ft. to 2,250 sq. ft.), creating a more accessible, centrally located clinic for students, faculty, staff, and the community.
- Creates new opportunities for community connection through programming, ice time, and events.
Who funded the Oulton‑Stanish Centre?
Funding for the project came from a combination of university sources and generous contributions from alumni and supporters.
- Former Dal Tiger Ian Oulton and his wife, Dr. Margaret Oulton, made a significant leadership gift.
- Ian Oulton and Dr. William (Bill) Stanish (MD’70) served as lead fundraising volunteers.
- Student fees were not increased to fund the Centre.
Who can use the facility?
The Oulton‑Stanish Centre operates like ÕýÆ·À¶µ¼º½â€™s other recreational facilities:
- The ÕýÆ·À¶µ¼º½ community uses the Centre for varsity, club, intramural, and recreational programming.
- Community use remains an important part of the facility’s purpose, and external groups are able to book the space.
What happened to the parking lot that was previously on the site?
The 78 parking stalls that were located next to LeMarchant Place were relocated to the opposite end of Wickwire Field.
As part of this work:
- The playing surface of Wickwire Field was shifted during the resurfacing project.
- This adjustment allowed Alumni Crescent to be realigned to accommodate the construction of the Oulton‑Stanish Centre.
